Itaipu Dam

This dam is visited by approximately 1,200 tourists per day and each Thursday it is lit up in the evening. Since it was opened in 1977 13.5 m people from 168 countries have toured the hydro site. It has the largest hydro electrical production in the world. The Itaipu community want it recognised as the seventh modern wonder of the world. When the dam was being constructed a parallel race way was built to ensure all the fish could still reach their spawning grounds. The competition organisers have all teams booked in to tour the dam. NZL tours tomorrow Friday.
The region we are in is very ecologically sensitive and the locals appear to be very conscious of recycling and preservation of the area.
The hotel has a food tax if you take more than you can eat from the smorgasbord. Interesting concept
